I’m A Dork So You Don’t Have To Be

In the absence of real content, here’s a bunch of software recommendations. Now it will look like I posted something but it is really just my dork ramblings.

1. Seriously, Sunbird is where it’s at. Just make a WebDAV space on your server and go nutty with collaborative calendars. Windows, Mac, Linux – it works on all of ‘em. Which I tend to like considering I work with them all on a regualr basis and I hate being tied to information. For 2005, I resolve to preach about Sunbird no more.

2. If you’re like me, you check your pockets every time you get in your car for your keys and wallet, wallet and keys, keys and wallet while tapping your pockets to feel that they are there just in case the sensation of the wallet in your pocket resting against your arse is all in your head. You are, then, equally paranoid at the thought of ever losing critical information that is on your laptop because of damage or theft. That’s why you use Password Safe to store your login/password combos, software codes, and other critical info. Again, plays well with all platforms. Keep your master database on a file server and access it from any platform. Database is Blowfish encrypted.

In the past, I’ve used Nullsoft’s little SafeSex for writing down passwords which also does the trick. Password-protected encrypted notepad that automatically deauthenticates after a brief time setting of your choice.

4. Lastly, I’ve been using DBAN for a while now. Permanent data destruction for hard drives from a bootable CD. It wipes drives clean with your choice of wipe methods including DoD spec methods.
