Minorthird’s Copycat Monday Quarter-in-the-Jukebox

If you download something, you really should text me some love with the little form on the left and tell me you like or leave me a comment below.

Manu Chao - La Primavera
Manu Chao - Me Gustas Tu
These two songs should by played together in this order as La Primavera is the lead-in to the other. I think summer when I hear these. Yay summer!

Babybird - July
He’s weird but all his songs are pretty.

James - Sometimes
On a flat roof, there’s a boy leaning against the wall of rain, aerial held high, calling “come on thunder, come on thunder!”

Whiskeytown - Jacksonville Skyline
The soldiers fill the hotels on the weekends.
I saw the pretty women as I walked through town.

Prince - Pop Life
Life it ain’t real funky
Unless it’s got that pop.

Big League Cheese

Monday, May 30th, 2005

You know you like cheese when you’re all out of traditional block-type cheese and you have no problem taking that bag of shredded Mexican fiesta cheese and hoisting loads of it into your mouth by your fingertips.

Tom Tom Club - Genius Of Love
So this has always been one of the best songs in the history of all songs ever, or at least since I saw the video on MTV at my Grandma’s in nineteen eighty something.

The Samples - Who Am I
In the door, she’s waiting, living up to every diamond in that ring.

Dream Academy - Life In A Northern Town
And though he never would wave goodbye, you could see it written in his eyes as the train rolled out of sight. Bye-bye.

Space - Female Of The Species
The female of the species is more deadlier than the male.

Dvorak - Op. 72 #2 In E Minor; Allegretto Grazioso
From Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances series (which is a nice bit of work as a whole, in my opinion). Broaden your horizons, anonymous Innanet surfer, and give it a try. This selection is one of my favorites.

It’s Audio Dynamite!

Sunday, May 22nd, 2005

It seems that if there is a song that features little audio samples from various sources throughout it, I’m probably going to like it. Like when there is a song but there’s this lead in that has some obscure clip of some Spanish language newscast or movie from the seventies. So yeah, I always liked Big Audio Dynamite back in the day.

Super Duper

Congratulations to Su! You’re a superstar!

Christian Spam?

Friday, May 20th, 2005

Is anyone else’s usual spam delivery now showing sudden signs of Christian-themed spammery? Now I’m seeing “Christian debt removers” and “Christian loan consolidation” and “Christian banking.” I wonder if this is an effective technique: “Honey, I’d normallly be skeptical but it says here they’re Christians and we could use a quick home equity line.”

This message I received from “Christian debt removers” is an HTML e-mail with a picture of a sunset over a seaside bay with islands and the words “Being debt-free brings inner peace.” Now, I’m not in any way involved in marketing but aren’t they kind of missing the very obvious David and Goliath (as creditor) imagery here? Opportunity missed, Christian debt removers.

Hawksley Workman - Your Beauty Must Be Rubbing Off On Me
A good song that you will like too.

Hot Hot Heat - You Owe Me An IOU
Yeah yeah, it’s on MVP 2005 but there’s no denying it’s a good song.

The Kidz Bop Kids - Float On (by Modest Mouse)
You’ve probably seen the
Kidz Bop commercials before. Kid friendly versions of pop music sung by kids and impersonators. No swears, etc. This version of Float On, does not disappoint. Best part: the “Yeahs!” after certain lines.

DJ Earworm - No One Takes Your Freedom (Scissor Sisters/Beatles/George Michael/Aretha Franklin Mash Up)
This is a nice mash up. Just listen.

Union College Dutch Pipers - Starfish And Coffee
I promise to make this the last tune from the glory days of Druzba’s “Performance Years.”

I Must Look, No, I Must Avert My Eyes

Sunday, May 15th, 2005

On any given day, Joan Cusack can appear to be either very attractive or entirely hideous to me. Sometimes she is both at once. How she manages to do this is a true Mystery of Hollywood Magic.

I You Too

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

I was squatted down in the kitchen, looking for a can of vegetables, this evening when the daughter came up behind me, put her arms around me from behind, and said, “I you Daddy.” She’s been saying “I You,” which is how she says “I Love You,” for some time but it’s always been repeated back after saying it to her first.

It’s hard not to well up a bit at that. When, all of a sudden, at just about 22 months, she’s starting to express feelings other than something tantrum-based. When, for the past 6 months, it’s been repetitively “No” to this and that and everything. When, at her young age, she’s beginning to, I think, show appreciation for people and to miss people and to love people and maybe know, just a little, what love means to her in some way.

I turned, when she said this, put my arms around her, and told her, “I You Too” and she looked me in the eye, leaned into me, and gave me a big squeezy hug before heading off to chase one of the cats down.

The Decemberists - The Legionnaire’s Lament
Any song that can rhyme both “joie de vivre” and “Champs d’Elysee” in the same four minutes is noteworthy.

Jon Brion - Here We Go
You’ve got to hope that there’s someone for you as strange as you are…

I Am The World Trade Center - Me To Be
I think this song was sampled for a Five Alive commercial in Canada last year.

The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone Tonight
You seem so out of context in this gaudy apartment complex…

Union College Dutch Pipers - Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon
Because the Innanet craves it… What is that extraordinary and delightful sound on the bass line? Oh, it is Druzba.
