I had the exact same thought the first time I read Rainbow Fish. The lesson seems to be, don't be different or you'll have no friends. Upon other readings, I think it is more the selfish pride that is the problem. Rainbow Fish is kind of an ass in how he treats the other fish who ask him for scales.

There are Rainbow Fish sequels that have other lessons. There is one about inclusion of outsiders and helping, there is one about not being scared, and another about diplomacy that involves a whale. Yeh, I don't know.

We have another book called Tico and the Golden Wings that has the exact same lesson. Bird gets special wings, his friends hate him, he hets his friends back only when he assimilates.

You know, I find that Rainbow Fish book highly disturbing. I mean, what's the moral? People won't like you unless you give them something. I mean no one likes the rainbow fish because he has something everyone else wants (pretty sparkly fins) and he doesn't want to give it away (makes sense to me! I have things that other people might want, but I'm not going to start giving it all away just because they ask for it politely!). But he's shamed into doing it and then the other fish like them. Hello? People (or fish), we live in a capitalist society. Silly commie book! :-)
