Fun With Stats

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Wow. Who knew world stats could be such fun?

Be sure to change what stats are displayed on each axis by clicking on the drop downs on each axis. Click countries on the right to track them individually.

Do life expectancy on the Y-axis and population on the X-axis and choose Rwanda on the the right to see how a genocide can screw a country’s statistics up.

Do “Number of girls compared to boys in school” on the Y-axis and “Women as a percent of labor force” on the X-axis and choose a bunch of Middle Eastern countries. Iraq went backward while neighbors made progress over their respective data sets.

Last one: Do “Contraceptive Use” on the Y-axis and “Girls In School” or “Population” on the X-axis and choose Saudi Arabia on the right. Granted, there is only 4 years of data on the graph but what’s up with that plummet?

Because You Need It

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

Innanet, I put these clips together for you because you need it:

The Outfield - Say It Isn’t So

The Outfield - Your Love

The Outfield - No Surrender

The Outfield - All The Love In The World

“You got Moulin Rouge on my Outfield.” “No, you got The Outfield on my Moulin Rouge.”

I’m not sure what’s going on with that last one.

Yes, But…

Your Web site may get a lot of traffic but does it come up as the #1 search result in Google for Super Duper Monkey Team? No? Well aren’t you sad?

Funny

I could watch Teen Girl Squad for hours and not be any less amused. Semi-obvious Easter eggs to enjoy on those as well.

Life With Tagline

Monday, March 13th, 2006

Peter Tomarken and his wife died in a plane crash. There’s a loss to game show land.

Before I go any further I need to make the following tasteless but unavoidable joke before anyone else out in Innanet-land does and I can claim all rights and ownership:

Control tower operators reported that the last communication they received from Mr. Tomarken, who was piloting the plane, was a report of engine trouble followed by the repeated phrase, “No whammies! No whammies! No whammies!” until the plane lost contact shortly thereafter.

Press Your Luck board (image from Wikipedia)OK, now I can continue. As a non-celebrity, I’m constantly fed this line, by celebrities, that being a celebrity can be hell. Sure, having to choose between blowout partes in the Hamptons or St. Bart’s can be agonizing but I’ll tell you what has to be true hell: Hosting a game show named “Press Your Luck” and having that follow you around the rest of your life.

I guarantee you that, at least once a week, Peter Tomarken had to listen to some schmuck he just met say something like, “Oh Peter! You’re going to get the raw oysters? I wouldn’t press your luck!” This would inevitably be followed by an awkward pause for expected but never provided applause.

I’m sure Tomarken had it down to a science: “If they mention the show or they mention the whammies, I walk.”

I’ll bet Bob Barker long since stopped bothering doing his own shopping of any kind.
I’ll bet Lee Majors switched to using self-service tax software on a home computer as soon as he could.
And, I’ll bet Peter Tomarken stopped engaging in risky behaviors, after a while, just because it wasn’t worth it.

Seriously, do you think the guy ever went to Vegas?

Oh Peter, pop culture weeps tonight.
